Dale - Service! - ( 13/01/2015 ) Tried to get a non standard mortice lock from another famous online supplier - could not. Someone suggested Ironmongery Direct. they had it, and loads more at a reasonable price. Got it early next day. The mortice lock or latch that you opt for should be determined by the job the lock and/or latch needs to perform, the size of the door stile you are working with and the centres and backset of the handle you have chosen to fit. Firstly you need to consider where the lock will be fitted and what the role of that door will play. A simple internal door between two rooms would normally only require a tubular latch, front doors tend to have a deadlock used in conjunction with a nightlatch and other external doors are often fitted with a sashlock that includes a deadbolt and latch in one unit.
In regards to the case size of the lock or latch you require, first you should know the measurement of the door stile you will be morticing the mechanism into. The stiles are the vertical pieces of wood on each side of the door that along with the rails at the top and bottom hold the panels in place. The lock or latch needs to fit inside this stile and therefore should not be as wide as the stile itself. Finally, if you already have lockable door handles on backplates that you would like to use, you will need to ensure that the centres of a sashlock are the same as the handle. The centre is the measurement between the middle of the follower (the hole for the spindle) and the middle of the circular section of the keyhole. The backset is the distance between the edge of the forend or edge of the door and the centre of the keyhole and/or follower. This dictates how far away from the edge of the door the handle will need to be fitted so should also be considered. This image provides a visual guide in case you require further explanations of these measurements.
