sliding barn door directions

Sliding barn door hardware holds a large door next to a wall and includes a track that allows the door to slide laterally. A set of hardware usually includes barn door rollers, a track, stops, mounting screws, and brackets that attach to the door. Installing the hardware is easy, but requires careful work; precision is essential for the door to operate smoothly. Use a tape measure to determine the height of your door. Add 2 inches of clearance to this measurement to get the total height. Examine your barn door hardware kit, and determine where the top of the door sits relative to the track; Ask a helper to hold the track above the door, and measure from the point you identified to the floor. Adjust the track until the point sits at the total height. Sit a level on top of the track, and adjust the track until the level is perfectly horizontal. Insert a pencil into the mounting holes on the track, and make marks on the wall at the center points. Read the manufacturer's recommendations for your hardware kit.

If you plan to mount the hardware directly to the wall, insert a drill bit onto a power drill and drill a small pilot hole at each of your marks. These holes enable you to center the mounting screws. If you are using a heavy door, if the mounting holes are not located above studs, or if the wall is not strong enough to hold the full weight, install drywall spacers and shims at each of the mounting holes. This process offers extra strength and prevents the wall from crumbling under the weight of the door. Ask a friend to hold the barn door track against the wall. Center the mounting holes over the pilot holes or spacers. Use your electric drill to drive the mounting screws through the holes and into the wall. Tighten the screws until they hold the track against the wall, but avoid tightening them too far. Use your level to ensure that the track is horizontal. Push the end caps or stops into place on either end of the track. Find the brackets and barn door rollers that came with your hardware kit.

Screw the brackets into the rollers, making sure to place washers between the nuts and bolts. Place the rollers into the track, and verify that the brackets face the right direction. Roll the rollers along the track from end to end, and ensure that they move smoothly. Ask your helper to hold the door up to the brackets. Keep in mind that the installation style varies; some brackets mount to the top edge of the door, while others mount to the front or back of the door. Hold the door in place, check to verify that the door is level, and mark the location of each mounting hole. Remove the doors, and lift the brackets and rollers out of the track. Use the mounting screws or bolts to fasten the brackets to the door. Lift the door back into the track, and test the motion along the full track length. The right tools make it easier to install sliding barn door hardware safely on any wall. On eBay, you can buy all of the necessary supplies without visiting the hardware store.
