There's A Troll Under The Grate Is it a troll? Maybe even Yoda after a week-long bender? That’s up for you to decide. But it’s there, underground in Wichita to haunt your dreams. Created by local sculptor Constance Ernatt, the rather large troll-goblin has been chained to pipes under a grate in the sidewalk near the Arkansas River since 2007. In 2013, someone either extremely brave or very stupid decided to break into his underground lair and stole his arm and his skull necklace. Ernatt repaired and returned him to his home in April of 2014 for Wichita to continue loving to fear. 2. Wichita’s Own Mini Stonehenge Is Even Better Than The Real Thing Although it doesn’t resemble Stonehenge exactly, this sculpture in Wichita’s Riverside Park is often referred to as Stonehenge Jr. Regardless of the non-similarities, it’s pretty cool.

Acting as a solar calendar, the sun is meant to hit the rock sculptures, limestone megaliths and colored glass to be able to mark the equinoxes, during which the large metal eye that is mounted on top of one of the rocks shoots the sunshine through like a laser beam, illuminating the ground and other monuments around it. 3. Blink And You Might Miss The Mini Shrunken Head The Museum of World Treasures is no secret to Wichita—but if you’re not careful, you could miss what’s hidden inside. If you’ve ever wondered what a real shrunken head looks like, then this is the place to go. Encased by glass, this bizarre but very real shrunken head is only a few inches big and can be found in the Pre-Hispanic area. It is said to be derived from the Jivaro Tribe which used the practice of head-shrinking as revenge after killing an enemy. 4. There’s A Donut For Every Appetite Been spending too much time at The Donut Whole to check out the Flying Donut? Well, then you’ve been missing out.

This tiny Wichita donut shop is much more than meets the eye. Inside you’ll find a TX donut that is easily the size of your head (almost) alongside bite-sized mini cake donuts so adorable, you might find it hard to even eat them. But you will, of course, because they’re donuts and one does not simply leave a donut uneaten, regardless of size. How this place isn’t known around town as another go-to spot for donuts in the city without the crowds remains a mystery, but enjoy it while it lasts. Once the world picks up, the lines will be out the door. 5. Trees In Wichita Are Given New Life If you happen to be driving through the city and notice tree stumps that have been carved into intricate people and various designs, you’re not seeing things. A local chainsaw artist has created some of the most unique sculptures you’ll ever find using nothing but tree trunks, a chainsaw, and a little paint. The artist’s name is Gino Salerno. When a tree dies in a public space, locals can count on Salerno to step in and make it a work of art.

His tree sculptures can be found randomly throughout the city, from Easter Island Moai replicas to nurses and volunteer workers near St. Francis Hospital. 6. Chicken Poop For The Soul … When Jaime Tabor’s lips got chapped as a kid, her grandfather used to tell her to put some chicken poop on them so she didn’t lick them. When she grew up to create her own line of lip balms, she knew that she had to call it Chicken Poop despite the fact that it contains neither chicken, nor poop. Tabor recently moved the production facility for this funky balm with the help of her husband downtown to give it a respectable home and help build the brand as they continue to find national markets. 7. Everyone Can See The Art At The Ulrich The Ulrich Art Museum is known by many, but visited mostly by students and alumni of Wichita State University. What most people don’t realize is that this place is open to the public, students and non-students alike, and admission is completely free.

For its small size, it’s packed with unique, modern art exhibits and frequently sees a few new pieces in their rotation. And as the crowds continue to grow in the booming downtown hotspots, the Ulrich is just what the art doctor ordered. 8. Don't Take Your Chances With The Lucky Tree Sitting on the side of K-96, between the Bentley and Maize Road exits, there is a tree. Although that statement seems to bear no significance, to some people in the area, it means a lot. You see, it’s a lucky tree. Some refer to it as The Lucky Tree, others The Wishing Tree or the Honking Tree. Whatever you call it, don’t pass by without honking. The origins of what exactly makes this tree so lucky aren’t clear, but honking for luck as you pass the tree is a secret of the city that has been passed down for multiple generations. And why be the guinea pig who tests out whether or not it’s bad luck to not honk? 9. Wichita Is Going Steampunk When locals visit historic Cowtown, they’re more than likely expecting to see a few spur-wearing, hat-tippin’ cowboys.

They’re probably not expecting to see Victorian-era, time-traveling, steampunk assassins. But that’s exactly what they’ll find at the museum on Steampunk Day. There is a growing Steampunk movement in Wichita and, although it’s been slow to build, is becoming more mainstream and main street every day. Come out to Cowtown for the May-scheduled event to see something straight out of an H.G. Wells novel – if H.G. Wells was a George Lucas fan, that is. 10. There’s A Lot You Probably Don’t Know About Lanterns If you’re like most people, you probably think there’s not much to know about lanterns. But head over to the Coleman Lantern Museum to see just how wrong you are. You’ll be surprised to see that there are hundreds of different styles of lanterns along with some cool old stoves, lights, irons and spotlights. You can find this unique and little-known museum located inside a small section of the Coleman Outlet Factory. Just follow the lights. 11. The Very First Hut For Pizza

Pizza lovers, where would you be without Pizza Hut? As it turns out, the very first Pizza Hut wasn’t much more than just that – a little, brick hut. Located at the intersection of Kellogg and Bluff in Wichita, Pizza Hut opened the doors of this small building for the first time in 1958. Soon becoming too big for its small shell, Pizza Hut soon began expanding, but the original building still stands. 12. Carrie Nation Water Fountain Is The Perfect Way To Quench Your Thirst At the turn of the twentieth century, Carrie Nation was a super-radical member of the temperance movement. In other words, she was really opposed to alcohol. Mind you, this was before prohibition. She felt so strongly about the cause, she was often involved in acts of what was considered terrorism at the time… Basically, she seriously smashed the hell out of the taverns she came across with a hatchet. A drinking fountain-monument stands in Naftzger Park available for anyone in the public to drink from.

And no, it does not serve alcohol. 13. Bumpers Become Banks In Wichita Located downtown on the sidewalk of a Bank of America, you’ll find a metal horse sculpture made out of vehicle bumpers. If you wander into the lobby, you’ll find three more of these sculptures, made in the same way but of different animals: a pig, a giraffe, and two goats. The pig actually acts as a giant piggy bank. Visitors are encouraged to put money inside and at the end of each month, the money is collected and donated to a different charity. 14. The Kansas Aviation Museum Is Spookier Than You Think Everybody across the state knows about the Kansas Aviation Museum. But what most people probably don’t know is just how haunted the place is. Museum employees have made numerous claims of experiencing supernatural occurrences. Reports range from hearing doors slam along with old-fashioned music, messages over the speakers from another era, and voices conversing happily. Apparitions have also been seen, including the sightings of a man in a 1940s hat and a spirit of a pilot who died in a crash is said to haunt one of the yellow crop duster planes located on the premises.

15. Here There Be Giants Muffler Men are a favorite find for offbeat roadside attraction lovers. And Wichita’s got a great one. Not just your ordinary giant, this Muffler Man has lights for eyes. You can find him standing in front of Brown’s Tires And Custom Wheels Center, holding a tire which looks absolutely tiny in his humongous hand. You can spot Wichita in a documentary on Muffler Men called American Giants in which Muffler lover Greg Holmes dragged a huge head of one of the friendly giants to the city for filming.
