The site is reputedly that of King Mark's castle (the defensive stronghold, Castledore, is 2 miles away) and of his son Tristan's ill-fated love affair with Isolde. The surrounding area has been described as the most beautiful and unspoilt part of the county, with many quiet footpaths (the ancient Saints Way passes by the front gate) and shady byroads.There are many attractive and-even in high season-secluded beaches within a short drive including Pridmouth, near Menabilly (Daphne Du Maurier's Manderley"). Polkerris, Lantic Bay and the historic Port of Fowey are just 5 miles away. Bodmin Moor and the north coast are within half an hour's drive. The National Trust property Lanhydrock House is very close, as are many famous gardens, while St Michael's Mount, Lands End and the New Tate in St Ives make interesting day trips.The present house at Castle (a former medieval manor) was built about 1810, its mainly classical lines incorporating gothic features.
