A front door can be solid and traditional, made of long-lasting wood that’s kept well-varnished and perfectly clean. A front door can be modern in style, filled with beautiful glass panels that allow plenty of sunshine and light inside. A front door can be painted in bright and cheerful colours, surrounded by plant pots filled with flowers. Or, a front door can be dark and forbidding, with a heavy security screen and a bevy of deadlocks to keep out unwanted guests.    Whether buying a new front door, back door or internal doors, there are plenty of options to choose from. One of the first things to consider when buying a new door is the material it is made from. The material of the door will determine how strong it is, and how much soundproofing it offers.
For houses that are built on a busy street or close to an airport, soundproofing would be incredibly important. For houses that are situated in built-up areas, having strong doors with good locks is essential. Buying a new door often means investing in door hardware essentials as well. garage door repairs gilbert azTo hang the door, door hinges are needed. merlin garage door problemsTo ensure the door opens and closes, door knobs and handles are required, while door locks and lock mechanisms make sure the door stays closed and safely locked. vintage door knobs anthropologieDoor handle and lock sets are another option for door security, as are latches and bolts. garage door repairs wellington

Only contact between office hoursThis Sydney family home ditches the ‘Gone Fishing’ vibe for coastal charm that echoes the calm of its seaside locale and combines vintage pieces with Art Deco style. Who lives here: Danielle Bressington, window dresser/stylist;
her husband Stephen Ravich, a sound recordist; their sons Anton, 13; and Boris, the Boston terrier puppy. Style of house: A 1960s weatherboard, three-bedroom split-level home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Timeline: The extensive renovation took seven months and included demolishing 80 per cent of the house and both front and rear extensions. There’s a vintage boat-hire sign in the front hall of Danielle Bressington’s home in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. It was salvaged from the boatshed she lived in during her 20s, a shack that was once a boat-hire business run by a man called, no kidding, Captain Salt. This sign isn’t the only thing Danielle has brought with her to this property. With it came a love of all things nautical that inspired the redesign of her weatherboard family home. Originally a 1960s flat-roofed house, it has been reimagined by Danielle and her husband Stephen Ravich – the pair all but gutted it – with a mix of coastal, Art Deco and mid-century touches.
“It had a really nice feel with lots of typical ’60s features: floor-to-ceiling glass, interesting details, and it’s very private and light,” says Danielle of the original dwelling. “We wanted to keep that when we did the renovation, but I really like the look of Queenslanders and I like a bit of Art Deco, too. The hope was to build a house that you can’t date, and to incorporate as many recycled and vintage elements as I could to give it integrity without looking like a reproduction.” Up on the hill overlooking the ocean, the home enjoys lovely sea breezes – all the new louvres, sliding and porthole windows from Cool Change Doors And Windows are often kept open to catch the soft salty wind. Gumtree and eBay proved to be online treasure troves of charming preloved finds for Danielle – the 1920s internal bedroom doors from Gumtree were repainted with their original Art Deco hardware retained, while the front door and bathroom doors were all discovered on eBay.
Emphasising the beachy feel are custom shades of pale sea green and blues found on painted feature walls throughout the home – the kitchen cabinetry, for instance, carries the muted green of Dulux Tiamo. “The colour I had in mind was a vintage bottle shade. Somewhere in between,” says Danielle. “It’s nautical but not in an in-your-face, ‘gone fishing’ kind of way.” The lime-washed timber floors and gangway-like hall, stretching from the family area at the back to the parents’ retreat at the front, are also reminiscent of a ship, along with the circular porthole-like elements that are featured. The renovation lasted seven months and meant the family had to move to a rental. But the disruption was worth it and collaborating with draftsperson and civil engineer Anna Holmqvist-Henry was the cherry on top – this is the couple’s dream home. “Anna was recommended to us by four separate acquaintances,” says Danielle. “She could see what we saw in the original house and enthusiastically set about helping us build on this.”
Danielle’s favourite room is her bedroom, with its verandah looking to sea “like a bow – it’s the Titanic moment!”. There’s also the large porthole window with its subtle blur of frosted glass that opens and shuts like a winking eye. “It’s the exclamation mark to the front of a boxy house,” says Danielle. As a window dresser and stylist, Danielle knows how to pull together vignettes of art and furniture that perfectly show off her aesthetic: reclaimed cane chairs contrast with contemporary black-and-white fabric for dramatic effect, a grand cluster of nine sherbet-coloured Art Deco pendant shades are hung at a variety of heights in the entry, and old glass bottles discovered under the house are now proudly on display. Danielle has also had period-style picture rails installed to add further charm and allow for changing art without hammering nails into the walls. What has surprised Danielle most about the renovation process is how much she enjoyed it. “The challenge I like is when people say, ‘you can’t do this or you can’t do that’ or ‘it’s too expensive’,” she says.
“I like to find solutions to design hurdles, whether they be financial or logistical. That’s what gives me a buzz.”“Ultimately renovating an old home. What made it most costly was the fact that we renovated instead of knocking down and rebuilding. But if it was a knockdown/ rebuild, then new council restrictions would apply and the house that was built in the 1960s couldn’t have been replicated now.” Would you change anything? “In our plans, we changed the garage to a carport in order to save costs but now we have to build storage there because it looks so messy from the street – we should have made provision for the door. Stephen would say the layout of the bathroom – it had a costly impact on the position of the laundry chute and, as a result, the laundry.”“Seeing the front porthole window in the master bedroom go in. For me, that was special. For more amazing home tours, try: >> Palm Beach cottage >> come inside this colourful beach home
