Use of genuine, solid materials that will last a lifetime Emtek door knobs, lever door handles, entry door locks, deadbolts, and other door hardware are made from solid forged materials including brass, bronze, and steel. Emtek does not cast or stamp their products, but instead uses a forging process that provides a flawless surface that can be highly polished if desired. Their use of solid material provides for thick and heavy high-quality products. Emtek crystal door knobs and cabinet knobs are made from true lead crystal that yields high optical quality for brilliant looking knobs. The flat facets on these crystal knobs are hand ground and polished using the same techniques for polishing gem stones. Crystal knob sets are silver-mirrored on the back side creating a highly reflective interior surface that is true to the historical heritage of these knobs. Heavy-duty mechanical designs provide reliable operation of products Emtek door knobs and lever door handles are supported by spring mechanisms that return the handle back to the "resting" position to prevent sagging of the handles.

Plastic bushings between the handle and backplate provide a friction-free wear surface for smooth handle operation. Emtek lever door handles have a fixed stop at the top of their stroke so the levers are only capable of rotating downward and never upward. All emtek handles have a "set-screw" that, when tightened, eliminates wobbling of the handle that often occurs in other hardware products that you often find in large home improvement centers. Emtek ships their door handle products with heavy-duty diecast latches that have strong internal springs, solid brass nose bolts, and sintered metal cams. They also provide faceplates and strikeplates that are made from solid brass material, not zinc or plated steel.GREENWICH VILLAGE has been home to the P. E. Guerin foundry, makers of hardware, since 1892. If a piece of furniture is missing hardware, says Andrew Ward, the president, the company can duplicate the needed part. ''We will replace anything,'' he said. Mr. Ward's great-great-uncle, Pierre Emmanuel Guerin, started the company in France in 1857 and soon set up shop in the United States, bringing with him hundreds of original hardware patterns.

In a dusty back room at the company, a virtual hardware museum, are hundreds of wood boxes containing the molds, all marked accordingly: lion's heads, twist drop handles, cheval claw feet, Louis XIV consoles, small keyholes and hundreds more. If an old bureau from a flea market is missing a pull, or a French door needs a new Cremone, P. E. Guerin will usually have a replacement in stock or will make a copy. Hardware can be made of nickel, chrome, brass, bronze, iron, gold, silver or verd antique, which has become very popular, Mr. Ward said. The company's stock, displayed in glass-covered mahogany cases, is extensive. It includes table legs with heads of goddesses, escutcheons with a laurel leaf design, spider web doorknobs and faucets shaped like starfish. To step into the shop is to go back 100 years; methods of casting pieces in sand molds are still the same. Metal is forged on the third floor. One floor below, there are thousands of chasing tools for engraving hardware in intricate detail, like the grapes and berries often seen on Louis XIV pieces or the expressive eyes of a panther.

These and other operations - welding, polishing, lacquering and plating - take place at three connected five-story town houses on Jane Street. A replacement doorknob, in stock, would range from $20 to $100; a custom doorknob starts at $100. 'Really Old' to Modern ''We carry a lot of really old hardware,'' said Stan Saperstein, president of Kraft Hardware on the Upper East Side. And he has a stockroom to prove it: Queen Anne hinges, Chinese Chippendale pulls, French country knobs and more. The store also carries modern hardware, like Plexiglas doorknobs. Modern hardware can be the most difficult to match, Mr. Saperstein said. Replacement hardware may not be readily available, because contemporary furniture manufacturers often design their own. If you have a new chest of drawers, for instance, Mr. Saperstein suggests sending a photograph of the hardware to the manufacturer. (Look inside a drawer, on the right, to find the name.) For duplicates of antique hardware, Mr. Saperstein recommends that clients bring in the piece to be matched.

Basic pulls for kitchen cabinets start at $3.50; period reproductions, like Sheraton pulls, start at about $9. 200,000 Pieces ''We carry all that obsolete and antique and hard-to-find hardware that people need,'' said Ray Rivera, floor manager at Simon's Hardware on Third Avenue. His motto is: ''If we don't have it, you don't need it.'' The basement is filled with about 200,000 different pieces of hardware, including iron hinges, brass door knockers and curtain tiebacks. Mr. Rivera prides himself on solving unusual hardware problems. ''I think I've heard every problem in the place,'' he said. Sometimes the solution means producing tricky levers that make a television pop out of an entertainment center or providing special hinges for glass doors. The 40-year-old shop is a busy place, with architects, designers and building superintendents clamoring for just the right nut or bolt. Antique hardware starts at $2 for a ''crazy-looking doorknob,'' Mr. Rivera said. The William Hunrath Company has been selling decorative hardware since 1903.

''People want to replace old doorknobs, locks, key plates and brackets, or they'll come in to replace towel bars, toilet tissue holders, any kind of bathroom accessory,'' said Nanette Scotland, a co-owner of the company. The company's inventory includes elegant dandelion-shaped curtain tiebacks, regal lion's head door knockers and simple white porcelain knobs for kitchen cabinets.
