Thank you for using DoneDeal.ieYou have to dive somewhat deep into the annals of limited-production auto-building lore to sort out the Victress SA1’s origin story. The brainchild of a certain Doc Boyce-Smith, who wanted to build and sell an affordable sports car, and a Hugh Jorgensen, who had the talent to design it, the SA1 precipitated just as fiberglass burst onto the scene as the ideal medium for upstart American carrozzeria.

By the mid-1950s, Victress’ catalog of build-it-yourself cars had expanded to six: three roadsters, including the S1A, two coupes and a monoposto racer. There’s an extensive breakdown of Victress’ history here, but fortunately, the swoopy S1A largely speaks for itself. If you want to play guess-the-styling influence, we’re seeing everything from the Jaguar XK120 to the BMW 328 Mille Miglia (both apparently stated inspirations) in its lines, and it almost predicts Ferrari’s Pinin Farina-bodied Spiders, which emerged just as the first S1As were prodiced. One thing’s clear: It’s a unique design, not a literal copy of a European sports car like, for example, the Allied Swallow. Sound like something you might enjoy? There’s one from the company’s early days up for grabs on eBay Motors right now.Period literature claimed that the S1A could be built on a modified Ford chassis for as little as $1,000, with basic body-only kits selling for $570 and deluxe kits, which included door cutouts, retailing for $620 (prices would later drop as production increased).

This particular car is -- like the Swallow we featured last year -- a project, although it is somewhat more complete. A view of the Victress S1A's incomplete interior. That's a Stewart-Warner Hollywood gauge cluster. Built from what appears to be a doorless basic kit on a Henry J chassis(!), it comes with much of the running gear in place, including a Pontiac 326 V8. A 280-hp high-output variant of this engine with a four-barrel carburetor was eventually produced, but a quick peek underhood reveals that this is the plain-Jane version. It’s hooked up to an automatic transmission, and everything is said to be operational. A buyer might perhaps be tempted to leave that as it is and focus on the bodywork and interior. But you could certainly change things up a bit if you’re feeling bold. With a removable windshield and side pipes, you’ve got a mean, low dry lakes-style speedster. Keep the automatic transmission and add some plush upholstery and choice bits of chrome (and side pipes; side pipes are good) and you’ll have a trim, sporty boulevard cruiser.

Both have historical precedent. For the former, see the Guy Mabee Special, which topped 203 mph at Bonneville in 1953 before transitioning to road-race duty. An example of the latter features in the 1954 film “Johnny Dark.”And that’s one of the great things about these old American fiberglass sport specials: Sold as kits, they were by nature meant to reflect the imaginations, dreams and budgets of their builders. You could go any number of directions with a modern-day restoration/build, and so long as you used roughly period-appropriate equipment, there’s not a thing even the snootiest of concours judges could say about it. Assuming that’s something you care about in the first place. The Guy Mabee Special in 1953. The pusher car appears to be a Muntz Jet. Heady times for low-volume American automakers, indeed. Full disclosure: The seller of this Victress S1A is Geoff Hacker, whom we know personally. Through venues including his Forgotten Fiberglass site, he’s done more to unearth the history of these obscure, hand-made postwar cars than anyone else.

In actually tracking them down and buying them up, he’s probably saved more of them from destruction-through-neglect than probably even he can count. But we’re not featuring this auction to give Hacker a boost: we’re genuinely interested to see where it winds up. These fiberglass American sports cars have long been dismissed as garage-built wannabes, but that’s changing. While browsing the most recent edition of the Hagerty Price Guide we noticed an entry for the Woodill Wildfire -- another low-volume American fiberglass roadster built between 1952 and 1956. While people were looking the other direction, show-ready Wildfires became six-figure cars.Value certainly isn’t everything when it comes to old cars; our advice is, as always, to buy and drive what you love. But with a well-established value comes some legitimacy, which piques the interests of collectors, which, at least in this market, seems to lead to inevitable price increases…especially when, as is the case with these fiberglass specials, supply is extremely constrained.
