Just peel off the adhesive backing and apply the patch over the tear. I bought these in an attempt to quickly repair the tears on my window screens. The package says it contains 5 patches but I actually received 7 in mine. These patches stick on really well. Even after a whole week of storms, the 2 patches I used on the window screens managed to stay on perfectly. My only complaint is that they're a bit of an eyesore. As you can see from the short video clip, the mesh on the patch doesn't match the mesh on the window screen so it sticks out like a bandaid.

The product does state that you can trim the patch to fit your tear but that option doesn't look all that much better and in my opinion, applying a larger patch seems to do a better repair job over the hole and keeps the tear from further fraying.
