sliding glass doors waterproofing

I live in a desert where seasonal hard rains occur 5-10 times per year. We have an automated door with a multitrack slide that it lets quite a bit of water in when it rains hard. The door is an architectural feature and very good looking, but the random rains create quite a mess. The patio is not under deep cover, which might prevent the problem. My question is what can I do to stop the rain from coming in under the doors? I don't want to lose the function of the doors, so caulking shut is unfortunately not a solution. One solution might be something that I can place in front of the door before a rain, but I don't know exactly what that could be. Here is a picture of a similar door: First does the patio roof have eaves drops/gutters? If not I would recommend installing them. This will help divert some of the rain water away from the deck and keep water from splashing on the deck. If you still get a lot of water at your door after the eaves drop/gutters you can then try one of the following:

1) Re-grade the deck away from the doors (as Tester101 suggested in the comments). This would be the best solution. 2) Install a trench drain system (flush with the deck) to divert water away from the door. Some issues with would be making sure the locations of drains catch and divert the water away from the doors. /webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10651&catalogId=13007&productId=141454&langId=-1&cm_vc=vc_fast_finder) to divert the water away from the door. Some issues with this method would be installing it before it rains, slight leakage between the dike and floor, installing in the correct location to divert the rain, and getting rid of the water after the rain.Browse other questions tagged windows waterproofing or ask your own question.Weatherstripping reduces drafts and energy loss in sliding glass doors. A home with sliding glass doors is essentially a home open to the elements. Glass, according to Saturn Resource Management, is a poor insulator. In sliding glass doors, the glass merely acts as a conductor for heat to escape and for solar energy to conduct into the home on a hot day.

To reduce energy loss caused by sliding glass doors, you could replace doors with low-emissivity (low-E) doors, which have a special coating that prevents energy from radiating through the glass. For homeowners without carpentry experience, replacing the sliding glass door can be difficult. Fortunately, simpler, affordable, weather-proofing options can reduce energy loss through a sliding glass door. Debris Small stones and debris from shoes can accumulate in the sliding glass channels. If the door is pulled over the debris, the debris may be enough to lift the door in the track. Any small crevices will cause drafts and energy loss. To prevent debris from accumulating in the sliding glass channels, vacuum inside the door's channels. Compression Strips Adhesive-backed rubber compression strips are effective weatherproofing tools. Commonly made of neoprene rubber, these strips can be cut to fit the length of the sliding door channel. The strips are moisture- and chemical-resistant, don't contract with cold temperatures and add an air-proof seal in channels and around the sliding glass door sash.

Weather Stripping Weather stripping sliding glass doors weatherproofs and prevents energy leaks. Brush fin or fin seal type weather stripping installed between sliding doors reduces energy loss and helps to weatherproof sliding glass doors. Both brush fin and fin seal use synthetic brush filaments to restrict air flow in gaps between the sliding doors.

Double-sided tape, included in the kit, is used to secure the plastic to the door frame. To shrink the plastic, the homeowner heats the surface with a hair dryer. The plastic sheeting shrinks and tightens to make an energy-efficient barrier that reduces drafts. /Getty Images Suggest a Correction
