If your home has narrow doorways, you’ll want to plan ahead to make the refrigerator delivery problem-free. Moving your old refrigerator to your new location presents additional challenges. Measure the width of the doorway with a tape measure. Standard house doors are 30 inches or 36 inches. Measure the refrigerator from front to back, including the handle and back coils. Measure the refrigerator from side to side, if that distance appears smaller. If the shorter distance is less than the doorway by an inch or more, you’re ready to roll. Remove the handles on the refrigerator if the shorter refrigerator measurement is greater than the doorway. Review instructions in the owner’s manual for the removal of the handles before you begin. Phillips-head screws are usually visible at the top and bottom of the handle, and you may need to rotate the handle horizontally to release it from the door.

Some refrigerator handles have a recessed set screw that requires removal with a hex wrench before rotation of the handle. Remove the doors of the refrigerator only if removing the handles won't provide clearance. Review the owner's manual before removing the doors and remove the toe plate if recommended. Start at the top hinge and remove the cover plate with a putty knife. Unscrew the screws for each door. Pull up to remove the hinge pins. Place the hinge pins and screws in a safe place. Lift up and out to remove the doors. Place the refrigerator on an appliance dolly with the smaller measurement to the back of the dolly. For most refrigerators, you’ll load the side to the back of the dolly. Strap the refrigerator in place on the dolly, with a strap on each door to keep it closed while moving. Pull down on the top of the dolly handle to engage the wheels. Place an extra person inside the house near the doorway. Roll the refrigerator to the doorway and get assistance from your helper to center the refrigerator in the doorway and lift up if necessary for a raised threshold.
