It appears Menards Inc. plans to close its store at 879 Mall Drive in Portage as it opens what it calls its new Kalamazoo East store at 5300 Gull Road in Comstock Township. Township officials have said the Kalamazoo East store is set for a "soft" opening on Sept. 1 and a grand opening on Sept. 16. A "soft" opening is typically an unadvertised opening that allows the business and its staff members to test systems and become fluid in operations before they are met by large crowds. Jeff Abbott, spokesman and promotions manager for Eau Claire, Wis.-based Menards Inc., answered a few questions on the matter via email: Question: When will the Portage store close? (The sign on the door says Sept. 1) Answer: "The Portage Menards store located at 879 Mall Drive is currently running close-out sales and will be closing soon."

Q: Why is it closing? Not cost-effective to renovate? A: "In an effort to provide all the latest, greatest home improvements products for all the loyal Menards shoppers in this area, we replaced an older, smaller store in this market with a brand new Kalamazoo East Menards store located about 15 miles away at 5300 Gull Road in Kalamazoo. The new store was built in our largest format and will have several great departments, a full-service lumberyard featuring a covered warehouse, beautiful garden center, appliances, pet and wildlife section, and even a line of convenience groceries for a one-stop shopping experience." Q: Was that the plan when Menards decided to build the new store? Q: When will the new store open and how large is it? (The sign on the old store indicates the new Kalamazoo East store will be a mega-Menards.)A: "Kalamazoo East will be opening on Tuesday, Sept. 1st.
