You’d need to have owned a three or five-door Mini to spot it but the Clubman has a slightly different dashboard with revised air vents and a few other detail changes. Sadly, BMW has decided to not offer the entry-level Mini One versions of the car in the UK, probably because Brit Mini buyers tend to spec their motors on the pricey side. Our car fits that description because with all its various options included the total price comes to £30,160. That’s a lot of dough for a Mini. It has the 2.0-litre diesel engine which, in Cooper form, produces 150bhp and has a six-speed manual gearbox. For the first time the car is also available with an eight-speed automatic ’box. Before we start driving, a quick walk around. The Clubman, while looking significantly bigger and podgier than the three-door Mini, is a lot better looking and more Mini-like than the overblown Countryman. Long and low to the ground, our Burgundy-coloured car looks very smart and classy. Those double rear doors aren’t particularly practical, but then it’s well worth the compromise for something that’s a bit different. The boot is a generous 360 litres and comes with side cubby holes, tie downs and a false floor that can be removed or latched upright.
You can also order optional folding seats that split 40/20/40. On the road, the 2.0-litre diesel sounds bit gruff when it’s under load, but not unpleasant. More annoying is its lack of go low down the rev range. The manual gearbox isn’t the slickest ever but does the job and I’d have it over the auto. The Clubman has its own dedicated suspension which puts the emphasis on a softer ride. It works well but would probably be even better if our car didn’t have run-flat tyres fitted. The Clubman might suffer less from road noise as well. There are plenty more practical family cars about, but not many that have the character and the quirkiness of the new Clubman. The more I drove it, and the more I looked at it parked outside, the more I liked it. In fact, it’s my favourite of all the current Minis.
