Charmian Carr was 73. Cast as “Liesl Van Trapp” in the Academy Award-winning film when she was 21, Carr died Saturday from complications of dementia in Woodland Hills, according to an obituary released by a publicist. Carr had attended Hollywood Bowl sing-alongs of the movie annually for years, until 2012. She also shared a great friendship with singer Michael Jackson, who was a huge fan, her family reported. Carr was born in 1942 to Brian Farnon, a musician and orchestra leader, and Rita Oehmen, a vaudeville actress. After “The Sound of Music,” Carr starred opposite Anthony Perkins in a Stephen Sondheim television musical, “Evening Primrose.” Her family said that Carr married then decided to leave the movie business and raise her two children, Jennifer and Emily. Once her children were older, Carr started her design business, Charmian Carr Design. One client was Jackson, who said “The Sound of Music” was his favorite film, Carr’s family said in a prepared obituary.
