These Belkin Wifi outlets are great. They can be controlled from your phone, from anywhere. They cost about $50 at Apple, Target, etc. A bit steep for turning a light on, but I found it a justifiable cost for this use. Certainly there are many other ways to do this same thing (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, laptop, unused cellphone), but this was easy and took about a half hour once I had the supplies in hand.

Setup is really easy. The Wemo connects itself to your home Wifi router and becomes accessible from your phone via their app. The coolest part is that IFTTT (If This Then That) now supports the Wemo! If you're not familiar with this, then I'll tell you about that .(see what I did there?) .It's a free service which connects many different data sources together based on simple rules called recipes. It can even control certain hardware, like this Belkin switch or the Philips LED Hue light bulbs. More on IFTTT later. « PreviousNext »View All Steps DownloadHow do I erase the remote control from the garage door opener's memory? There are a few instances that the memory of your opener would need to be erased. NOTE: Erasing the memory will remove ALL remote controls and keyless entry codes from the garage door opener. Begin by locating the LEARN button on the back or side of the motor unit; generally this is on the same side as the antenna wire. You may need to remove a light lens cover or open a control panel to gain access.

The LEARN button may be green, orange, red, purple or yellow, and will have a small LED next to it. Each opener is equipped with at least one light bulb (maximum of 100 watts each) which is controlled by the receiver logic board.

The light(s) turns on when the opener is activated and turns off automatically. 4 ½ minutes is the standard delay but this can be adjusted using a Multi-Function door control, if one is installed. If your light consistently stays on, the reason may be as simple as the light button on your Multi-Function door control being accidentally pressed. You could also have a problem with your logic board or door control circuit. The Multi-Function door control is a panel on the inside wall of your garage that has a push button for operating the door, as well as a Lock and Light button. If the Light button has been pressed, just press and release the button again to turn off the light. See Multi-function door control light features. If the garage door has been open and you have been walking in and out of the garage, you could be activating the safety light feature without knowing it. The safety light feature will activate the lights when the door is open and the safety sensors are crossed.

If the beam has been crossed multiple times, it can give the appearance of a light that won't turn off. If you have a Multi-Function door control, it may have a motion detection feature. This would also explain why the light would stay on as long as there was movement or heat detected in the garage. Deactivate the feature while you are inside your garage if you do not want the light to stay on. Some troubleshooting will help determine the problem. Use the following steps: Determine the door control type by consulting the owner's manual. Reset the light timer to it's lowest setting (1½ minutes). Disconnect power from the unit, and disconnect door control wires from the opener.Light(s) should come on. Allow 1½ minutes for light(s) to cycle off. If light(s) turn off after 1½ minutes, the problem lies with either the door control or wiring. Continue with step 5. If the light stays on, it is the logic board. Disconnect power from unit. Remove door control from wall, connect to operator via a known good short pair of wires.
