Melissa and Dion started their first bedroom makeover at the Kiwi Living house this week and called on our resident fashionista Kylie Bax for some tips on what would work best for a girls' bedroom. Melissa wanted to create an ethereal space for a young girl opting for a stylish wallpaper design and plenty of storage options. Dion had three projects to take on including making over an old set of second hand drawers, replacing an old and run-down door and even hanging a piece of beach diftwood decor from the roof to provide an alternative hanging space.

DIY Project 1: Door Replacement Things to consider when replacing an internal door: Purchase the correct size. Standard doors are 1980mm high, 40mm thick and come in various standard widths to suit your opening. You should have a 3mm gap around sides and top and about 5 to 10mm off finished flooring. You should use 3 zinc plated hinges 150mm from top and bottom and 1 in the middle. Hinges should be 80mm x 20mm x 3mm thick. Door hardware should be fitted at a height to match existing doors. Leave 3mm gap from top of door to door of jamb. Measure and mark the 3 hinges onto the new door from taking accurate measurements from the existing door hinges, alternatively you could use a storey rod to transfer the measurements. Doors have a slight bevel on the side edges. The short point of the bevel must always be closest to the door opening. The bevel provides a perfect clearance when opening and shutting the door. Using a sharp pencil draw around the hinges on the new door.

Using a sharp chisel tap you chisel around the line you have marked then carefully chisel the inside completely out to the thickness of the hinge to form the rebate. Check that the new hinge fits neatly with the hinge pin facing to the top of the door. Now screw your hinges to the new door remembering to pre drill first. Door can now be fitted to existing jamb. Always a good idea to paint the top and bottom of the door before you hang. Determine what the old surface is. Place the dresser somewhere that can handle making a mess. Remove all the drawers. Sand all the surfaces. Undertake any repairs that may be needed before refinishing the surface e.g. drawers sliding in and out without sticking.
