CALL 02 6260 2252Twenty years ago, Young British Artist Gary Hume's hospital doors caused a storm - but can they now? Alastair Sooke meets him In pictures: Gary Hume's Doors When I turn up at his London studio, Gary Hume is fast asleep. His assistant lets me in, and soon afterwards he shambles into view, rubbing bloodshot eyes. Wearing paint-splattered jeans, and with thick silver bristles flecking his face, he looks like he has spent a week getting well and truly wasted. In fact, he has that morning flown from his second home in upstate New York to hang a new show - a survey at Modern Art Oxford of the famous "Door Paintings" that made his name.
It's two decades since Hume's generation of students at Goldsmiths College stormed the art world. Led by a spirited 23-year-old Damien Hirst, the group staged a knock-out two-part show in an empty Port Authority building in London's Docklands in 1988. Freeze, as it was called, was seen by Tate's Nicholas Serota and the collector Charles Saatchi, among others, and is often cited as a watershed in British art, ushering in the infamous Young British Artists movement of the 1990s. Hume's contribution to Freeze consisted of three life-size paintings of hospital doors. Rendered in shiny layers of household gloss, the paintings reproduced the dimensions of double-hinged swing-doors inside St Bartholomew's Hospital in East London, with circles of colour representing porthole windows and rectangles standing in for kick-plates. "The first image came to me after I saw an advert for Bupa health insurance in the newspaper," Hume recalls, lighting up a cigarette. "There were these depressed people in a depressed NHS hospital, and in the background was this modernist door - clear, perfectly designed, functional, democratic.
I saw it and thought, bloody hell, there it is - I can paint that. Hume's instinct was inspirational: all three of his Door Paintings at Freeze were bought by Saatchi for several hundred pounds, and he decided to make a series. With their formal simplicity, and subtle suggestions of exits and death, Hume's Door Paintings proved a hit. garage door guy tacomaTo date, he has created more than 50, 18 of which have been gathered for the Oxford show. wood stoves for sale kansas city"Over the years, my Door Paintings have become somewhat mythologised," he says. used jeep wrangler 4 door for sale in nj"The Oxford show is trying to look at them again and ask: do they deserve the mythology?" external glazed doors hardwood
"You'd better ask me after I've hung the exhibition. But I think it's going to be surprisingly beautiful and surprisingly tough. The paintings pack a low blow. They have many metaphorical meanings - they're doors of perception, doors of your birth, the very first and possibly the last things you see before you die. front door replacement glasgowThey have a blankness that demands you invest them with some meaning. 4 door jeep wrangler for sale in kansas"Seeing them together, there's a sense of disquiet because they can turn slightly macabre - like a regiment of doors with anthropomorphic qualities. There's something hurtful about them." He pauses, sucks on his cigarette. "It's hard to say why. Why does a minor chord make you go crazy but a major one doesn't? I think my Door Paintings are beautiful but entirely indifferent to you.
And that's emotionally hurtful." And what about Freeze? Does that deserve the mythology? Hume and Hirst are not the only artists in that show who subsequently found success; Freeze also featured Hume's former girlfriend Sarah Lucas, as well as Fiona Rae, Michael Landy and Angus Fairhurst, who committed suicide earlier this year. "There wasn't a sense that we were changing the shape of British art, necessarily," Hume recalls. "But we wanted to change the given trajectory of how you became an artist: leave college, get a part-time teaching job, or a full-time teaching job - all very slow. We thought: why should we wait for this slow endorsement? Let's just take it." Today, of course, the wild-child YBAs have become greying stalwarts of the establishment. Hume was elected to the Royal Academy in 2001 and has a painting in this year's Summer Exhibition, in a room curated by fellow Academician, Tracey Emin. "Not really," says Hume, who also represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1999.
