Typical hollow core doors have thin sides that will not support screws, bolts or any type of hanger. By inserting an expanding bolt into the door, you can install a clothes hanger on the door using the bolt as an anchor. As you screw the hanger into the anchor, the bolt expands and gets tighter, securing the anchor to the inside of the door. Select a location on the door where you wish to install a clothes hanger or any other type of fixture to support clothes or towels. Mark the spot with a pencil.

Choose a drill bit that's the same size as the accumulative diameter of the arms when they are folded back or the diameter of the sleeve. Drill a hole through the first layer of the door at the mark using a cordless drill. Insert the bolt with arms, or the sleeve into the hole as far as it will go.

It may fit tight or loose depending on what type of anchor it is. Place a 1 1/2-inch screw through the mounting hole on a clothes hanger or hook. Place the tip of the screw into the hole on the anchor. Using a screwdriver, tighten the screw, securing the clothes hanger or hook to the door. As you screw the screw tighter, the arms on the bolt, or the sleeve will expand inside the door tightening and anchoring the hanger to the door. The anchor is made from polypropylene that resists corrosion, is nonconductive for anchoring electrical components, and is low-friction to facilitate screw installation. The anchor hammers into a 5/16" drilled hole until flush with the mounting material's surface. Before the screw can be inserted into the anchor to create a secure hold, the included key is used to open the anchor's wings behind the material. The fins on the anchor head grip the mounting material to prevent spinning when a screw is inserted, and the anchor will stay in place if the fastener is removed, facilitating fixture and screw changes.

If using screws other than those supplied, the anchor accepts #8 to #12 size screws with a minimum thread length of 1". The Toggle TA anchor meets Federal Specification FF-B-588-D for Type IV anchors.SpecificationsUltimate Tensile Strength ValuesAnchorDrill DiameterScrew Description1/4" Plywood1/2" Plywood3/8" Drywall1/2" Drywall5/8" DrywallTA5/16"#8 x 1-1/4"124 lb.Not applicableNot applicableNot applicableNot applicableTB5/16"#8 x 1-1/2"Not applicable175 lb.97 lb.143 lb.Not applicableTC5/16"#8 x 1-3/4"Not applicableNot applicableNot applicableNot applicable159 lb.Ultimate Shear Strength ValuesAnchorDrill DiameterScrew Description1/4" Plywood3/8" Drywall1/2" Drywall5/8" DrywallTA5/16"#8 x 1-1/4"265 lb.Not applicableNot applicableNot applicableTB5/16"#8 x 1-1/2"Not applicable126 lb.167 lb.Not applicableTC5/16"#8 x 1-3/4"Not applicableNot applicableNot applicable237 lb.Warning: Use one-fourth or less of listed maximum values for safe working loads (as required by local regulations).
