Melanie Stengel/New Haven Register West Haven >> Officially open for business on Sunday, the new train station drew positive reviews from residents and commuters.Approximately 35 cars filled the parking lot of the $130 million station between Railroad Avenue and Hood Terrace. Eileen Glancy and Jeremy Stein, of Farmnigton, decided to use the new station to travel into New York after learning parking was free until Sept. 2. After Sept. 2, parking is $6 for daily passes and $300 for six-month permits. Parking is free on weekends and holidays. "I think it's beautiful and very easy to use," Glancy said. FIX IT:�How can commuter trains increase ridership? Glancy and Stein have frequented Union Station in New Haven and found West Haven to be more accessible. "I really like the over-pass, it's safer than having to cross the street to get to the other tracks," Stein said. Vice Chairman of Planning and Zoning Steve Mullins took his two children to ride the first departing train at 4:44 a.m. "They were the first children to board the new West Haven trains," Mullins said.
Mullins and his children rode the train to Milford to have breakfast. "I remember meetings way back in 1999 and 2000 when we first started talking about it, now it finally happened," Mullins said. Work on the train station began in 2010 under Manafort Brothers, of Plainville. Construction included a station building, pedestrian bridge, elevator, stair towers and two 1,080-foot covered platforms. Surface parking lots will accommodate 658 cars, according to Department of Transportation spokesman Judd Everhart. Nicole Danz, Alexia Medina and Ashton Danz-Mahaud were aware the station would open and just wanted to take a ride to South Norwalk. "It's very clean-cut and easy to access," Danz said. Originally, a parking garage was part of the train station plans, but it was cut a few years ago and cost the station 300 to 400 parking spots. Mayor John M. Picard has said the city and DOT will review parking needs once the station is open. Danz said a garage "may be something to look into in the future."
However, Glancy and Stein said they were satisfied with parking availability. Resident Michael Mercuriano led grassroots efforts to bring the station to the city with a petition in 2000. Mercuriano and others continue advocating for a garage. Helen and Laura Dolan live only a mile from the station. Mother and daughter were taking the train into New York with friend, Colleen Monahan. Helen Dolan's husband is a MetroNorth train conductor. "This is very convenient for us and it appears to be very easy to use," Helen Dolan said. She added a parking garage wasn't necessary. "As long as it doesn't spill into our neighborhood, there are quite a bit of spaces already." Site improvements include installation of drainage structures, new pavement, exterior stairs and walkways, fencing and railings, site signage, parking line striping, landscaping, exterior site lighting and traffic signals. The project also included relocations of existing railroad feeders and ground wires to United Illuminating Co. poles, installation of railroad signal equipment covering a distance of 6 miles along the New Haven mainline, and furnishing and installation of signal and auxiliary power transformers.
