A couple of history notes on the history of Valentine cards from Patricia Lutz, director of the Washington Historical Society. In America, prior to the mid nineteenth century, Valentines were mostly homemade expressions of love. The influence of the immigrant German cultures resulted in the folk art of paper cutting and paper designs. Items such as... feathers or locks of hair would be added. The Victorian Valentines on display at the West Bend Library (Washington County Historical Society’s collection) are a Victorian “collage” style. The manufacturing of cameo-embossed lace paper allowed competitive companies to produce cards quicker and cheaper, yet still have the romantic lace boarders. Poetry was added to the inside; this left the sender – sometimes illiterate or non-English speaking - free from having to come up with the right words.

By the end of the 19th century the Industrial Revolution changed manufacturing, and mass production began, which could create cards cheaper and faster. Card’s themes included less amorous phrasing and more funny images and humorous quips. Cards cost on average 5 cents and up to $1 for the more intricate. Valentines also had moving pieces, making them more unique. One of the most unusual Valentines in the WCHS collection is the “Everybody Nose” Valentine with a projecting cloth nose on the card. The cards on display at the library range in date from 1887 to 1940.
