From a Tim Ditchfield design, the house took a year of planning. The multi levels allow for separation yet not exclusion. Residents are connected on different levels, both physically and emotionally. The client described it as a fantastic experience. "They love everything about it," Mr Curley said.It's got clean lines, big surfaces. "Open the front door and you connect with the water straight away." That view becomes apparent from the water feature at the front to the swimming pool and spa through to the waterway. The project involved demolition of an existing two-level home, in-ground concrete swimming pool and decks. That needed 90% dismantling by hand. The urban site meant everything was tight, and needed exceptional managing. Interlocking concrete piles were bored and poured to the rear and side boundaries. These allowed for the excavation of a basement level for car parking, storeroom, media room, wine cellar, plant room and water tank. All excavated material was good-quality sand.

After the excavation was complete, the degree of difficulty was raised significantly with the installation of more than 100 screw piers. This needed an extremely complicated and detailed footing system to carry the loads of the three levels above, all comprising suspended slab ceilings and roof. Each level had steps down and steps up as well as large beams at every turn. The pre-planning and installation of the electrical and home automation system meant the degree of difficulty went to a new height. All the floor tiling was cut from the same limestone mine in Italy so as to give a seamless look in the 1200 by 600mm tiles. Patterned Bisazza glass mosaic tiles have been used for wall and floor tiling in all bathroom and ensuite areas. The exacting preparation needed before a tile was laid is a real testament to the contractor. The internal walls are core-filled block with solid white set plaster finish to 90% of the building. Detailed timber panels have been secretly fixed to the remaining walls.
