This incident is coming to light shortly after a Home Depot security guard in North Carolina was stabbed while pursuing a shoplifter.Closer to home, a security guard at Lilburn's Walmart was shot and killed this year by a man trying to steal three TVs.Police will be the first ones to tell you that shoplifters can be dangerous, but as far as they're concerned, writing down a license plate is a reasonable thing to do, as long as the employee is staying at a safe distance.Lilburn Police Captain, Christie Wentzell suggests, if employees and customers feel comfortable, they should "get a vehicle make and model, if you can, get the tag number, but allow us to be the ones who approach."Home Depot tells CBS46 their concern is that a shoplifter who knows he or she is being followed may feel compelled to race away in their car and run someone over.One man who worked in loss prevention tells CBS46 other stores take their policies even further."I used to work security at Lenox Mall, and when people were stealing, we weren't allowed to acknowledge that.

And instead of saying 'empty your pockets,' we would have to say something like, 'Oh, would you like me to hold onto that until you're finished?' or '...until you're ready to purchase?'- but no, we weren't allowed to contact, or help police, or anything like that."Home Depot said firing the employees was a tough decision, but it's one that they stand by.
