The door sweep keeps out rain and cold air. Even if your house has more than enough insulation, you'll still be cold if air can come through gaps in the doors and windows. While you can weatherproof the vertical gaps around an exterior door with adhesive weatherstripping, you need a door sweep that attaches to the door to seal the bottom. It typically consists of a metal or vinyl frame that you screw to the bottom of the door with a rubber seal that makes contact with the threshold. When the seal wears out, you have to replace the sweep, which may involve taking down the door. Close the door and tap out the hinge pins with a hammer and 16d nail. When the pins are out, open the door and pull it off the hinges. Lay it flat on a pair of sawhorses. Unscrew the old door sweep with a Phillips screwdriver. It's a U-shaped piece of metal held by screws on the front and back of the door. The screws may be covered with a coat of paint. If so, chip it off with a utility knife. Slide off the old sweep and clean the wood underneath it with a dry cloth.

If you find any rot, scrape it out with a chisel and fill the wood with epoxy wood filler. Let the filler harden before proceeding. Unpack a new sweep and cut it to fit the door with a hacksaw. It's better to cut half the total amount you need to remove from each end rather than making a single cut on one end. Paint the sweep to match the door, if desired, then rehang the door. Open the door and grasp the end of the sweep with a pair of pliers. Pull sharply to slide it out and remove it. Unpack a new sweep and cut it to the width of the door with a hacksaw. Insert the end of the new sweep in the track in the bottom of the door. Installing an exterior door sweep is easy enough to do and can be done with minimal tools and effort.

The best types of door sweeps are the ones that you attach with screws.   These door sweeps are made are made from aluminum and rubber or nylon brushes and seem to work the best and last over time.  The metal frames also have oval slots that allow the sweeps to be adjusted up or down to fine tune the sweeps weather seal. Measure the width of your door then buy a door sweep that is at least as big as your door.  You will later cut the door sweep down to the appropriate size. With the door closed, measure the bottom of the door and transfer your marks onto the door sweep.  Using your heavy duty tin snips or a hack saw cut the door sweep to fit the bottom of the door. Place your door sweep against the bottom of the door making sure the rubber seal or nylon brushes come in contact with the threshold or floor. The trick is to install the door sweep so it contacts the threshold or floor evenly but is not too tight that it binds the door and prevents it from closing.  

This is where the oval slots, [adjustment slots] come in handy. Install the screws in the middle of the oval slot but dont over tighten them.  Positioning the screws in the middle of the slot allow you to micro adjust the sweep up or down. Try opening and closing the door a few times to check the fit. Then finish the job by tightening the screws. Test the door to ensure that is still opens, closes and locks easily. There are a lot of commercial sweeps available, but he came up with one that’s dirt simple, cheap, and easy to replace when it wears out. Then he clamped a saw guide to the bottom and cut a 3/4-in.-deep kerf along the center of the door.

He made the sweep out of a piece of rubber-cove base from a home center—the cheap stuff you see glued to the walls in institutional buildings—by ripping it to width on a tablesaw. To determine the width of the sweep, he added the door-to-threshold distance to the 3/4-in. kerf dimension, plus 1⁄16 in. to provide a little pressure between the door and the floor. He slid the sweep into the kerf and secured it with 1-in. brass screws driven through the door every 6 in. Nails also would have worked, but using screws will make it easy to replace the sweep when it wears out.
