Movable glass wall systems are "going mainstream," according to an article published this week in Window & Door magazine and online.

Your's truly was interviewed in the article. I discussed some of the trends both our Hufcor dealers and our partner, Monarch Door Systems in Barrie, Ontario have seen within northern climates--regions not typically associated with folding walls or large lift & slide doors. According to the article, three factors are driving the rapid growth of exterior movable glass wall systems: 1. More homeowner interest 2. An expansion of sales beyond warm-weather climates 3. The entry into the market of large door and window manufacturers Certainly I agree with all of these, but Hufcor's primary focus and expertise lies within the commercial markets and the high-end residential side of the business. The Monarch by Hufcor exterior systems are becoming very popular in the commercial construction marketplace, with an increase in natural daylighting and seamless transitions from outdoor and indoor spaces. Both types of systems--the folding walls and lift and slide systems--are showing growth as restaurants, hotels, retailers, schools and offices are looking for ways to add flexibility to their spaces and daylighting to the interiors.

And the trend in these areas is to design large, wide open spaces. Monarch by Hufcor is lock step with this trend. We offer a 77mm, thermally-broken framed system that provides the structural integrity to build the doors up to 10' tall and 4' wide. Our lift and slide doors can be built up to 10' wide. The lift and slides, if designed like a bi-parting patio door, can offer openings up to 60' wide! Now that's an enormous, visually-stunning wall system. The Window & Door article suggests that large, multi-panel doors are starting to find their way into mid-range homes (as opposed to multi-million dollar homes in years past), with the big dogs of the window and door industry jumping into the market. Hufcor's fear is that in an effort to create a "broad appeal" (code words for - cheaper construction), the folding doors and lift and slide doors lose the quality associated with these products. We all have experienced cheap patio doors that we want to rip out of the wall and throw onto our back porch (especially if you live in a part of the country where rain, snow, sleet, and extreme temperature shifts occur)!

Folding doors require precision in installation and components. These two terms are not associated with cheap. We hope that cheap, pre-fabricated offerings maintain the functionality of the premier doors on the market today from marketing leaders like Nanawall, LaCantina, Panda, Solar Innovations, Western and Monarch by Hufcor. These niche, high-end systems that have built the industry and the solid reputation of these walls. Ease of operation is critical to customer satisfaction. And the precision components within the high-end systems like Monarch by Hufcor ensure positive customer experiences. Hufcor can also provide a very unique exterior bifold door system, HydrauLift™, that can also open up large walls to the exterior. The Hydraulift system gives designers and owners another way to create seemless transitions from indoors to outdoors. And a nice benefit of the HydrauLift bifold door is the elimination of any planned "stacking" space for the folding doors. The bifold doors simply fold up like an airplane hangar.

The HydrauLift system uses a patented hydraulic operating system that pulls the doors tightly shut, forming a tight barrier against the elements.
