door locks for daycares

Sadly, another family has recently experienced a terrifying child care incident; this time in Chicago. On Monday, Cornelius Jones showed up 15 minutes before his daughter's day care closes, and was shocked to find the building locked and no one there. After hearing his daughter Journee crying inside, he immediately contacted authorities. Thankfully, the fire department was able to break down the door, and Jones captured the rescue in a cell phone video, published on ABC News."I was wondering where is she, where is she. I hear her, but I couldn't see her," Jones told FOX 32. "And one of the police officers flashed a light to the left and flashed it back to the right and that's when I saw her crawling towards us screaming and my heart just dropped."Jones said workers at the day care told him they were still in the back when he arrived. But Journee's mother, Quanesha Borum, said employees told her that they mistook her 1-year-old for a toy doll. The center's director has since apologized to the family for the incident.
The Department of Children and Family Services is currently investigating the incident, but it's in the early stages. They did tell FOX 32 that this facility has not had any problems until now."If anything it should be shut down, I mean nobody leaves kids behind, toddlers," Jones said. "I don't care how old they are, that's dangerous." Though the day care facility normally closes at 6 p.m., that is the same time Ross normally gets off work as a security guard. Since April, she has had an agreement with the facility that she would head straight over there as soon as she finished work to pick up the child. According to KPRC, she pulled into the center’s empty parking lot at 6:45 p.m. and found the door locked. When she tried to call, there was no answer. In a panic, she drove home to see if her husband had picked up the baby. They rushed back to the facility, where Ross pounded on the darkened windows in hopes that whoever had been taking care of the children had simply fallen asleep with the door locked. The only sound was a lone baby crying — Ross knew it was her son. Her husband broke the window and Ross recorded the entire incident on her cell phone. She wanted to be able to show it to the facility and, if necessary, to the police. When her husband came back into view with 10-month-old Jordan in his arms, Ross cried as he handed the baby to her.
Ross has filed a report with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and police are investigating the child abandonment report. No charges appear to have been filed against the day care facility yet, and police will not be filing charges against Ross or her husband. According to Joann Davis, owner of the center, the employee responsible for locking the baby in for the night will not be fired. It is believed that the employee bathed the baby in an attempt to help the little one with diaper rash, then fed the child and put him down to sleep while they finished cleaning up for the night. The employee apparently forgot that the baby was still in the crib when they locked the door and left. It is reportedly the first time anything of the sort has happened with that particular employee in the years s/he has worked at the facility. Davis was visibly distraught as she spoke to one local reporter, saying that she was just happy the baby was okay while continuing to apologize to Ross and her husband.
She has since posted emergency telephone numbers on the center’s front door just in case, and the entire staff is devising new procedures to ensure that nothing like this happens again.
