We’re going to go ahead and charitably refer to our stripper Ford as a “work truck,” although it could also be referred to as a purist’s dream, or something you will rent from U-Haul a few years from now. That said, we’re the odd sort that thinks the black-plastic grille, bumpers, and side mirrors look awesome, especially when set against a contrasting paint color, and the wheels are honest-to-goodness steel units. Did we mention the three-across seating? It’s not quite a straight-up bench seat, but the regular-cab F-150 does boast 40/20/40-split accommodations. Ah, the options list—this is where our base F-150 story takes a turn for the interesting. As the lightest F-150 available, the two-wheel-drive, regular-cab F-150 is a speed machine in search of the right motor. Good thing Ford offers two such engine choices: the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 and the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote V-8. Even though we’ve found the torquier EcoBoost V-6 trumped the V-8 at the drag strip when installed in like-equipped last-generation F-150s, we’re willing to sacrifice 33 lb-ft of extra torque for the Coyote’s rippling eight-cylinder soundtrack and extra 20 horsepower.
Hey, this is an old-school pickup build we’re running here, why not get the V-8? As a bonus, Ford’s weight figure for the regular-cab, 4×2 V-8 is 57 pounds lighter than the EcoBoost model. To further help our budding sport truck leap off of the line, we opted for the $470 electronic-locking rear differential with a shorter 3.55:1 axle ratio. (The F-150 gets a 3.31:1 axle ratio and an open differential as stock.) The locking axle requires the $495 Trailer Tow package, which brings niceties like a four- and seven-pin wiring harness, a Class IV hitch, an auxiliary transmission-oil cooler, and an “upgraded” front anti-roll bar. Combined with the V-8 and the shorter rear end, the Towing Package also brings a Ford-certified 9200-pound tow rating—up from the base, V-6 version’s 5100-pound maximum. The no-cost Race Red paint doesn’t help performance or towing, but it does look the business and adds a touch of sportiness. It also has the word “race” in its name. So that’s it, really—it takes three options to transform the base F-150 into a quicker, better-sounding, better-hauling base F-150—and for $29,175.
Of course, you could add the $2055 101A package ($1555 after a mandatory $500 package discount is applied), which adds power windows, power door and tailgate locks, power mirrors, daytime running lights, and Sync, but why? Ditto the $4645 four-wheel drive and $145 carpeting—4WD doesn’t help you do burnouts, and you can’t hose down carpet.
