A close relative of Mark and Emma Corcoran also revealed last night they threatened to cut off Mark’s legs and slammed the “ruthless bastards” who carried out the vicious raid in the early hours of Thursday.

One of the couple’s children woke in terror after her dad was knocked out by the butt off a gun and screamed: “Daddy is dead.” The relative told how quick-thinking Emma, 37, called gardai in Thurles, Co Tipperary, after the Traveller mob attempted to break the front door of their home in Burnchurch, Killenaule, just after 3am. A seven-man Traveller gang eventually smashed through a front window with a sledgehammer before threatening the terrified family. The relative, who spoke to Mark just hours after the terrifying raid, said: “Mark said the gang smashed in the front window and they had two guns and a large knife or machete. “They were ruthless bastards, they showed no mercy, they wanted money and that’s it. They don’t give a damn how.” The relative, who lives near the parents and their three daughters, all aged under nine, added that the gang beat fitness businessman Mark with a gun. They said: “They tied Mark up and he told me he was out cold because they hit him. “

“Mark said he couldn’t believe someone could be so ruthless and that they threatened to kill one of the kids if they didn’t give money.”

astra 3 door for sale gumtreeA massive operation was put in place under Operation Fiacla and gardai from Tipperary, Kildare, Laois and various national units started to track the suspects. Officers said the first five arrests, all men aged in their early 20s, were made when a car was intercepted at around 4.30am near Naas, Co Kildare. The family’s 4x4 was later stopped at Newlands Cross where the other two men were detained. These men, aged 26 and 29, are suspected of lying low for several hours before attempting to return to Dublin.

The Garda air support unit traced the car and made every effort to make a “controlled stop” during rush hour. However, in the end they were forced to ram the car. No injuries were sustained during the incident. The seven suspects are now being held in a number of stations across Tipperary and Kilkenny under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act. The suspects all hail from the Coolock, Belcamp and Priorswood areas of North Dublin. The arrested men believed to be known to gardai are suspected of having links to a series of similar style burglaries across Ireland. Such crimes have been a target of Operation Fiacla for the past 18 months and the arrests are considered to be amongst the most significant breakthroughs since the plan was rolled out by Commissioner Martin Callinan in April 2012. Almost 7,000 people have been arrested under Fiacla while nearly 4,000 of these have been charged and brought before the courts. Supt Gerard Delmar, from Thurles Garda station, praised the work of officers across the State.

He said: “When this happened there was a plan put in place with members of all units involved. “That plan was executed excellently. “We would appeal for anyone who noticed anything unusual or suspicious in the area to contact officers in Thurles.” Mark, Emma and their kids were last night being comforted by friends and family in Killenaule. Emma runs Dura Beds Limited with her brother Paul O’Dwyer. Gardai believe the Dublin gang were given instructions about the location of the house and its layout by a gang of thieves from Rathkeale in Co Limerick. Last night local Fine Gael councillor John Fahey slammed the attack. He said: “It’s a disgrace the family would be attacked in such a vicious way. “The family was asleep in their beds at half past three in the morning – a family that minds their own business and do their work and get on with their lives. “I’m shocked and saddened that such a thing has happened in our community. Luckily enough there is no loss of life. “I want to commend the gardai, they did a great job and that is great satisfaction to us all in this area.”

3am – A gang of seven men armed with two guns and a large knife arrive at the home of Mark and Emma Corcoran in Burnchurch, Killenaule Co Tipperary, in a Volkswagen Passat. They try to break in the front door but when efforts fail they smash through a large front room window with a sledge hammer. 3.05am – Emma Corcoran rings 999 and speaks to gardai in Thurles, Co Tipperary. Operation Fiacla is put in place with units across Munster and Leinster put on alert to move to key strategic positions. 3.20am – The gang flee the scene with less than €2,000 and some jewellery. They also take the family’s Kia Sportage 4x4. 4.30am – Officers in Naas, Co Kildare intercept a Volkswagen Passat and arrest five suspects. 9am – The Garda air support unit spots the family’s jeep on the M7 and units are sent to the scene.
