Automatic door openers make accessing the garage a breeze. A garage door keypad makes your automatic garage door opener more convenient and easier to use. The keypad consists of a button remote that requires a security code to open the door. It is placed outside the door so that the kids and anybody with a code can open the door to enter the garage without hunting for the remote in the car. The most difficult part of the installation is figuring out which type of wireless technology is appropriate. Not all "universal" keypads will work with all door openers. Check your instruction manual for more information on purchasing the right keypad. Install the battery or batteries in the new keypad following the manufacturer's directions. Then program the keypad to the garage door opener. Pick out a four- to six-digit key code depending on the keypad. To enter keypad or remote programming mode, most openers require the pushing of a "Learn" button on the opener. The button is close to the wiring terminals or under the light cover.

After pushing the learn button, the key code is entered into the keypad. On some openers, a final initiation sequence is entered. Check that the keypad will open and close the door with the key code. Pick a place to install the keypad that is convenient. Usually this is on the inside of the garage doorjamb near to where you enter the garage. Measure a height of approximately 5 feet on the doorjamb. Open the keypad opener and install the upper screw. Some keypads have a keyhole-type slot that you place over the screw head. Simply push the pad down slightly to hold it in place. Install a second screw to secure the keypad.
