Install bifold hardware in minutes. If you are planning to sell a home or if you just want to update it, simple repairs can make it more marketable. One quick update is the installation of new bifold doors and hardware. These materials are relatively inexpensive, and it's worth your time to replace both doors and hardware instead of swapping out old parts for new. Bifold doors come in different widths and styles. Choose a set that best matches your door frame opening and application. Measure the width of the opening. Cut the track 1/8 inch shorter than the opening with a hack saw if necessary to fit. Install the track centered on the overhead jamb using a screw gun and screws provided in the kit. Tap the pivots into the top corners of the doors. These are cylindrical pieces that the door uses to slide along the track. Screw the jamb brackets to the floor, aligned with the top track. These are two metal pieces bent at 90 degrees. Insert a snugger guide into the track beside the pivot. These are two rectangular pieces that help the pivots to ride secured into the track.

Depress the spring in the snugger. Position it under the track and release it to lock it into the track. Lift the door and allow the pivots to seat in the track and the jamb bracket. Turn the small foot at the bottom of the door to adjust the height of the door. Drill a hole for a knob on the guide door, centered from top to bottom, 2 inches from the edge of the doors. Only penetrate through the door half way. Drill another 3/16-inch hole through the door from the back. Lay out the position of the hinges on the door. Measure 7-1/8 inches down from the top of the jamb and mark the edge of the jamb. Make a second layout mark 3 inches down from the top hinge and another mark 31 inches down from this mark. Install the other half of the hinges so the holes for the hinge pins are facing down and the bottom edges of the hinges are aligned with the layout marks and flush against the face of the door. Hang the door and test its fit. Install the hinges on the other jamb and door if you’re hanging four doors. Remove the doors from the jamb hinges. Place the doors face side down on a flat surface and align the doors at the top and bottom. Mark the location of the mounting screws, drill pilot holes, and mount the hinges with the screws provided. Locate the door hinges 6 inches from the top of the doors and then every 31 inches. Rehang the doors and check their movement. Install the control arm bracket on the back of the outer bi-fold door so that it’s flush with the outer edge of the door. If the jamb has a headstop, measure its thickness and add 1 inch to this measurement to calculate how far down from the top of the door to mount the control arm bracket.

If there is no stop, mount the bracket 1 inch from the top. Attach the arm to this bracket and then open the doors so that they fit flush against the wall. Adjust the length of the control arm so that it’s 1/4 inch less than the width of one door.
