Sherlock Holmes fans, history buffs and students of crime may be attracted by an opportunity to buy antique wooden doors from Dartmoor Prison. It seems that England's most notorious and forbidding prison had a little remodeling done after a riot in 1990, when inmates in one wing ripped their cell doors from their hinges.The doors were original equipment in the prison, which was built to hold French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars. Men were kept at first on prison ships in ports along the south coast of England until the granite building was built in 1806 a few miles inland at Princetown, Devon.Later, during the War of 1812 between England and the United States, Americans captured on the high seas were locked away in Dartmoor. Closed after 1814, the prison was reopened to house civil prisoners in 1856. Today Dartmoor is a medium-security facility.Sensing the value of the doors as history, the prison's governor sold them to benefit a local charity. Tobys, an architectural salvage company in nearby Newton Abbot, bought 275 doors and is marketing them as conversation pieces or for more practical uses.

Partner Paul Norrish said several pub owners have bought them.The 65-pound doors have a metal core inside two slabs of pine and measure 25 or 27 inches wide by 75 inches high (a standard American interior door is 30 by 80). They have no bars; a peephole was the custom in the 19th century. One drawback: The doors have sliding bolts but no locks or keys.Each door costs around $370, plus shipping.
