Please call before you go — just in case things have changed since my last visit. And tell ’em Mary Kay sez ‘hey!’ If you can’t get enough of Savannah, please check out SENTIMENTAL SAVANNAH by my dear friend, colleague and junking buddy Polly Powers Stramm, who is a life-long Savannahian. This is a non-fiction collection of Polly’s columns dealing with reminiscences and stories of Savannah and Tybee Island then and now. You can order a book from the publisher, History Press, or pick up a signed copy at Savannah bookstores like E. Shaver Books or Barnes & Noble. Mermaid Cottages: It’s a really cool cottage agency run by a friend of mine on Tybee Island. The cottages are all shabby chic, many pet friendly, all wireless wired. Metrolina Antiques Market: Held in fairgrounds similar to the now (sadly) defunct Lakewood Market in Atlanta, Metrolina has the same set-up, many of the same dealers. And it’s the first weekend of the month. @Home Vintage General: Wonderful shabby chic antiques, adorable gifts.
It’s even mentioned in HISSY FIT! 7 West York St., Savannah, GA. 912-201-0015. Chamblee, Miami Circle and Bennett Street (both in Buckhead) also have good concentrations of shops. Eugenia’s Antique Hardware: This is the spot for glass doorknobs, brass escutcheons, or any other vintage hardware. They’re all authentic, no reproductions, meticulously organized, and you get to pet the owner’s elderly dachshunds. Indiana Antiques: My favorite spot in the antique shops clustered in and around Broad Street in Chamblee… Don Scott Antique Market: Also held the second weekend of the month. Higher end dealers of silver, crystal, big dollar antiques.
Air conditioned, which is a plus in the summertime. And don’t forget to visit both north and south exhibit halls — a free shuttle bus runs between them. Jonesboro Road exit off I-285 South. The Stalls, Buckhead: Big dollar snooty-hooty booths, but the designer vignettes are fun to browse, and sometimes you may find an actual bargain. Fairgrounds Flea Market, Raleigh, NC. Held every weekend, except during State Fair in Oct. Outside dealers are the lure here, except for two inside dealers who have actual antiques. Good for primitives and shabby chic. Ridge Road, off I-40. NoFo @ The Pig: Located in the old Piggly-Wiggly store in Raleigh’s Five Points shopping area, NoFo is my favorite quirky, flirty fun shop. Has a café and restaurant, wine by the glass and great tabletop, gift, pet and girly-girl stuff. 2014 Fairview Rd. 919-821-1240. They also have a store in Wilmington, NC with even more fun stuff. St. Petersburg, FL. Lots of great junk/antique shops on Fourth Street North, and also Central Avenue, downtown.
Also, Gas Plant Antiques is a good antique mall.A whole town full of antique shops! Same thing, and check out The Golden Lamb, which is an old inn — the perfect spot for lunch after you’ve junked. There are no BAD bookstores, but here are a few of my favorite independent bookstores, run by caring, fun people who truly love to put books in the hands of readers: Chapter 11 Books, any Atlanta store, although the Emory Village store was closest when I lived in Atlanta.
